Whence went the " magic "?

When any people find themselves in an environment winning starts with at least not going against the very nature of selves & the environs(eg food!). Was there not a time when breadwinners were all over the place but not looking as they would today- only those who can look as if such a heavy load were like thin air do many women go on their side?
