Let the world say what to do in such a case

Someone makes some statements in the presence of a few and some people go and talk to someone who goes ahead and does a lot of damage over many years. However it turns out, when they bring the matter to the notice of the sayer that neither the hearers nor the person they told understood what was said. Does the person now interprete? Had the statements any(only?) thing to do with previous plans?
