A problem with " story hearing "

It is a problem caused because " they " heard some stories, thoroughly believed same, judged amidst themselves in clear terms without consulting the person who should have known better than the story-tellers about the veracity of key issues involved. Only in trying to confront the person as if all discussed plainly does it become clear that all was not well with the stories.
